Thanks to modern technology over 50 Guild members were privileged to join Katie Wignall, a London Blue Badge Guide on a Zoom tour of Spitalfields; its history past & present.

In absorbing the fascinating history we visited Sandy's Row and Artillery Passage, where former shops belonging to the Huguenot silk weavers existed until the 1770s. Then on to the Tenter Ground where the wooden frames were used for drying fabrics. The fabric was stretched and held tight by Tenter Hooks ... hence the phrase. There is an old Soup Kitchen still bearing the original sign for the Jewish Poor, bearing the date of 1902 (and 5662 for the same year in the Jewish Calendar

In just about an hour we had covered just a couple of miles but visited one of the most interesting, colourful, and constantly changing parts of London which, although outside the boundary, has a long-connected history with the City and its activities. We had walked without moving our feet, not seen a single car or bicycle, and not had to wait to cross streets or avoid fellow pedestrians and tourists. As the Master summed up this wonderful talk, ‘We have no sore feet and are still cool despite the hot weather outside; Thank you Katie for such an enlightening, interesting and well-presented talk’.
