The Master took two groups of Guild members and their guests to the British Museum. Our guide was the most excellent Sue King, Guild member and Chairman of City of London Guides and of British (Blue Badge) Tour Guides, who was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all we were to see. The tour focussed on a few of the larger and most famous items due to the limited time available - The Enlightenment Gallery, the Rosetta Stone and the Assyria galleries (modern day Iraq) where we were greeted by two colossal winged human-headed lions that flanked an entrance to the royal palace of King Ashurnasirpal II at the Northwest Palace at Nimrud. Sue then showed us the magnificent Lion Hunt reliefs that had adorned the walls of the hallways of the palace and explained how the King himself would hunt the Lions. Our tour finished at the Parthenon Galleries and the ‘Parthenon Marbles’ (also known as the ‘Elgin Marbles’).
We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Great Court restaurant at the Museum. It was a lovely taster of what The Museum has to offer and left us wanting to return to see more of its many antiquities.

""The Guild was formed in 1908 for all fellow Freemen of the City of London – today we number almost 1,500 members from all backgrounds, and from a wide range of professions.  In addition, our Annual Programme is the City’s most extensive. It features events with privileged access for Members and their guests, ranging from opportunities to dine in London’s finest Livery Halls, to less formal activities. Our Annual Banquet is a highlight of the Guild’s calendar and attracts members from all over the world.
