The Master arranged a day out at the Mansion House, the home of the Lord Mayor of the City of London. In the morning we had a private tour of the magnificent Palladian Grade 1 listed building, taking in the Drawing rooms, Long Parlour and the sumptuous Egyptian Hall. The tour concluded with a visit to the plate room where we were in awe of one of the largest and finest gold and silver plate collections in the world, including the Sword and Mace - symbols of the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation's authority.
In the afternoon we were joined by guides from the Guildhall Art Gallery who selected their favourites from the Harold Samuel collection of Dutch and Flemish 17th century paintings that are displayed in the house. We learned how to "read" a painting and had a real insight into 17th century life as painted by the likes of Brueghel and Frans Hals. Now - do you know about the fireplace in the gent's loo at Mansion House? No? Ah well, you'll have to join us another time to find out...
