As a member of the Charterhouse Development Board, the Master is delighted to be able to offer members this opportunity to visit, and perhaps discover for the first time, this historic building. Since its foundation in 1611, the Charterhouse in Clerkenwell has provided accommodation to a community of residents – known as the Brothers. But the story of the Charterhouse goes back even further, to the time of the Black Death when the land was a burial ground for plague victims and to the building of a Carthusian monastery in 1348; since when it has been a private mansion, a school for boys and – its current role – an almshouse.

Details of our tour are yet to be completed, but our visit will give access to a building where some of the most definitive events in British history have taken place - both Elizabeth I and James I held court in the Great Chamber and the ‘offside rule’ in football originated in the Norfolk Cloister, at the time of Charterhouse School’s residency.

As well as the tour we will enjoy canapes, bowl food and drinks
