Postal Museum and the Underground Railway

Tuesday 17th February 2026

Start: 11am | Finish: 3.30pm approx.

Postal Museum and the Underground Railway
We all take the Royal Mail for granted. But have you ever paused to reflect upon what lies behind the remarkable service that delivers our letters and parcels.

Join the Master and discover how postcodes came to be, the innovative way they have been used, and the surprising ways they have impacted society. Discover the story of definitive stamps, from the reigns of six monarchs and explore over 180 years of iconic design. Discover how stamps and royal cyphers are developed and produced and how monarchs influence the designs.

You can spot your postie by their brightly coloured clothes, but what is the history of their uniform and how has it changed? From smartly dressed Victorians and their buffed buttons to modern posties and their all-weather active wear.

Enjoy a ride through the hidden tunnels of Mail Rail and discover a unique piece of industrial heritage, explore inspiring exhibitions packed with incredible objects, exciting stories and fun-filled interactive displays.
From cryptic Victorian Valentine cards to a lion encountered on Salisbury Plain and the odd pistol, too. There is nothing ordinary about the story of the post!

Following our visit to the museum we will then retire to the Olde Cheshire Cheese for lunch.

Any member wishing to join for lunch only may do so at a cost of £75.
