Carol Service at St Stephen Walbrook and Refreshments

Tuesday 17th December 2019

Start: 6.30 pm | Finish: 9.30 pm

The Master has chosen St Stephen Walbrook, the Lord Mayor's and Christopher Wren's parish church, for the Guild's carol service this year. St Stephen Walbrook was the only church designed by Wren in 1672 and was his prototype for the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. It was the first classical dome to be built in England at the time. The church features the magnificent round altar table by Henry Moore with forms cut into the circular sides suggesting that the centre of the church reflected the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem commemorating the sacrifice of Abraham and Isaac as a prefiguring of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross and the place for the offering of the Eucharist at the heart of Christian worship. This place was designed for people to gather as a community around the altar where God could be found at the centre.

The Master has arranged for the London Nordic Choir to sing for us and enact the renowned tradition of Santa Lucia, the celebration of bringing light into the darkness of winter.

The service will be led by the Reverend Hilary Ison, whom we have welcomed many times as the Guild's guest.

There will be refreshments in the church afterwards, this year catered by The Cook and The Butler.
