College of Arms
10 October 2007
Thursday 27th September and Wednesday 10th October
The Windsor Herald, William Hunt Esquire TD, once again kindly hosted both these College of Arms visits.
The visits opened with a brief history of the practice and control of the granting of arms and of the building in which the College resides. This 17th Century home of the Royal heralds was built between 1671 and 1678, replacing the late 15th Century building which was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, but fortunately the Herald's Charters, rolls and records were rescued, and saved. The College survived the 2nd World War too, in spite of a direct hit in 1941.
The visit then moved to the Record Room where a number of historical documents recording the work of the College over the past eight centuries were revealed.
The evening finished with an informal buffet supper in the Earl Marshal's Court Room, during which Windsor Herald kindly answered questions, adding further insight into the fascinating history and work of the College.
