Alderman Sir Gavyn Arthur was born in Africa in 1951. He was educated at Harrow, the University of Vienna and Chirst Church, Oxford. After Oxford he came to the city to read for the Bar and has stayed ever since. He was called to the Bar in 1975 and in 1977 secured a tenancy in Harcourt Chambers in the Middle Temple. He is now a senior chambers member, a Bencher of the Middle Temple and, in 2002, was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court. He is the first practicing barrister to become Lord Mayor.

Sir Gavyn joined the Guild in February 1994, and he is a Liveryman of both the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers and the Worshipful Company of Gardeners.
