Sandown Park - a day at the races

11 June 2005

On a bright sunny day close to 100 Guild members and their guests assembled at Sandown Park on Saturday 11th June for the Guild's traditional mid-summer's day at the races. This year the Guild was particularly honoured to be joined by two members of the Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators and their families and friends, and it was a great pleasure to welcome them to this event. The Guild was also delighted to welcome, as a guest, the General Manager of the Rock Hotel, Gibraltar, who had hosted the Guild's visit to Gibraltar last September so magnificently.

Like most days at the races, this was a day of fun and relaxation, made special by the good fellowship of old friends and new, all brought together by a common interest in the Sport of Kings. During the afternoon, well fortified by ample sustenance and refreshments, many tried their luck with the tote or the bookies at the race track. Minor disappointments and delights punctuated the afternoon, but it was not until the final race had been run that the real excitement broke: two Guild members had chanced their luck on rank outsiders and found that their insights were well rewarded at the last. It was a delightful finale to a great day out.
